Strategic Engineering Advisors

Product Development is complicated,

but building an experienced engineering team doesn’t have to be. There is another way!

Hiring and managing engineering leadership can seem daunting, but our Senior Engineering staff are ready to help provide guidance and mentorship for your team without the full-time cost. Whether it’s mechanical hardware, electrical circuit boards, embedded software, or all of the above, our team will serve as your Senior Engineering staff, looking over your team’s shoulders, reviewing injection molding designs, or explaining how early choices on the PCB can affect manufacturing, firmware updates, and customer support.

My group has collaborated with Root3 on two of our projects over the past three months, and their contributions have exceeded our expectations. My group is start-up sized, with limited experience, so we’ve been utilizing Root3’s expertise to guide us through the more complex parts of product development and to fill in the knowledge gaps of my team.

We’ve worked primarily with Chad, Christina, and Conrad on these two projects, and I couldn’t be happier with their efforts and contributions. The three of them are extremely insightful, engaging, and very friendly. Additionally, we never have any lulls in communication. Their team is very responsive and always makes time for us when needed.

We’ve enjoyed working with Root3 so much that we plan to continue consulting them on future projects. I would recommend Root3 to any of my colleagues who might need engineering or design assistance.

Ryan Baumgaertner

Project Engineer, CORAM Technologies

Root3 Labs has been a trusted engineering partner for our lab at Johns Hopkins. Their team consistently delivers high-quality work, from precision repairs to advanced circuit characterization.

A special mention goes to Christina Krueger, PE, whose technical acumen and ‘joie de travailler’ elevate every project. Her strength in communication (e.g. clearly documenting scope and progress) makes collaboration effortless.

Highly recommended for any lab or team seeking excellence in device prototyping, repair and characterization.

Frequent Questions

Is this a great fit for your team?

  • Medical, Aerospace, & Defense R&D and Manufacturing
  • Your engineering team is frustrated but could succeed with the right guidance
  • You’re looking Partner to help your junior engineers grow and develop
  • You’re looking for a “Done With You” approach – you don’t need additional project engineers

Can Root3 Labs help do the work, too?

Sure, this would be a “Done For You” approach, and we’re happy to perform engineering tasks or prototype fabrication as needed. We’ll put together a separate Project Budget for specific deliverables or a Master Services Agreement when the deliverables aren’t clearly defined.

What about Intellectual Property Rights?

IP Rights can be a complicated issue, but not with us. Our Non-Disclosure Agreement keeps your information confidential. If we come up with any ideas worth patenting while being paid for our services, they’re yours to patent. Consult your attorney, but you’ll probably want to include our names on your patent filings. We’ll sign your Combined Declaration & Assignment document transferring all rights and interest.

A Case Study

Hiring experienced engineers is hard and great candidates are tough to find. We’d been working with our medical device customer for years but their mechanical work had grown to the point they wanted to hire someone internally. Since they were all electrical and software engineers, they were worried about hiring a recent graduate without a senior mechanical engineer to supervise and mentor the new hire. We offered to be their senior mechanical advisor, making their decision easy.

While familiar with using Solidworks as a software tool, our client’s engineer had never designed an injection molded assembly for production. We provided some reading materials and walked through feature designs, material selection, wall-thickness requirements, drafts, fillets, and the process of a tolerance stack-up to ensure reliability. It’s quite similar to how we mentor our interns and recent grads at Root3 Labs.

It didn’t take long before our young engineer became more independent and didn’t need our help as frequently. That engineer is now almost 3 years into his new job. He still reaches out with technical questions or specific problems. We’re still engaged with the customer to help when they need extra support since they aren’t ready to hire another engineer.

Why Strategic Engineering Advisors?

Senior Staff without the W2’s

We bring a wide array of experience to your problem. As engineering design consultants, we have worked on literally hundreds of projects over the years, but it’s not just a mile wide and an inch deep. We also ramp-up quickly as we dig into a new technology or technical topic giving us deep expertise on many topics. Benefit from our experience on a limited engagement without resorting to permanent hires. Plus, we’re introverts, so you don’t even have to invite us to the holiday party.

Expertise + Experience

Easier said than done, the process of problem-solving is to eliminate one variable at a time until you’ve identified the root cause. Some variables are harder to eliminate and may require a lot of exploratory surgery only to find out it wasn’t the problem. Are there creative shortcuts to eliminate that variable before getting out the grinder? Take advantage of our hard-earned experience.

Certifications & Credentials

Did you know the State of Maryland (and almost all other US States) requires anyone providing engineering consulting services to be a licensed Professional Engineer and the company to be a registered Professional Engineering Firm? What is a Professional Engineer, and what do the acronyms behind our names mean?
